Stop Loss Order

Investing 2 Comments »

We all know how important is risk management and cutting loses on the stock market. One of the best tools, that can help us are stop loss orders. Stop losses are easy to use and effective. Nevertheless, a lot of investors don’t use them, forget to use them or think that they don’t need them.

How does stop loss order work?

It is simple. You place an order to buy or sell when the stock reaches certain price level. When the stop loss is ready, you don’t have to watch the stock price all the time. Your order would be executed automatically when the set price level would be reached.

For example - set your stop loss 10% below price at which you bought and you limit your loss to 10%.

The advantage is that you don’t have to monitor your stocks all the time. You will not lose more than you accepted to lose. You will not forget to sell, when stocks are going down.

When setting a stop loss, you must be aware that sometimes dynamic price fluctuations may occur and they can trigger your order. It is good practice to set price level a little below desired level to avoid such situations.

Where to set a stop loss?

There are different opinions and strategies. You can have your own loss level you accept and you always place stop loss based on this.

It is a very good idea to set a stop loss slightly below support levels (half of white marubozu body, certain SMA or EMA, trend channel border…). Very often, breaking out the support level indicates further movements in breakout direction, therefore it is a good place to close (open) the position.

These orders are especially useful for people who can’t dedicate whole day to watch the market. Then use stop losses and remember to set properly the period of time when your stop-loss orders are active.

Sleep for money

Entertainment, Lifehacks, Money 1 Comment »

One of my readers, Wesoly Terrorysta translated my post about food habits to Polish and published it on his blog (of course with my permission). He added his own opinion in his post. In general he agreed with all points except the last one, which is:

Sleep more. You don’t eat or spend money then.

I definitely don’t have the feeling that I have to defense my advice, but this made me into short reflection mode.

First of all, this last point was mainly for fun. One of my former co-workers was a big fan of shopping. He always spent a lot of money this way. In order to decrease expenditures, he tried to apply two rules:

  1. Work a lot of time at office.
  2. Sleep a lot.

Whether you work or sleep, you don’t spend money. Sounds funny, doesn’t it? Of course he didn’t take this approach 100% seriously.

I liked it so much that when I was writing my post about food habits, I decided to add this one as a final point. That’s it.

Sleep more. You don’t eat or spend money then.

But there is a lot of truth in this point. Many people sleep not enough time. This is really bad for health and in future it can cost them a lot of money.

Another point is that I’m much more productive after calm, long, rejuvenating sleep. It is very important for me to sleep well and enough time, especially as I do a lot of workouts almost everyday.

Before sleep, it is good to slightly decrease temperature in your sleeping room. Turn down your heating. This helps to fall asleep easier and you also save money. When you sleep, you don’t use lights, computer and TV, so you are also saving money on electricity.

Last but not least, if you have any source of passive income, you simply earn when you sleep. Amazing.

Probably, there are even more interesting advantages related to sleeping. One thing for sure, I hate when I have to start a new day after sleeping not enough hours.

Good night.

Productive Saturday - My latest lifehack

Lifehacks 4 Comments »

My latest lifehack is especially dedicated to full-time workers. I call it productive Saturday, and of course it helps to make our Saturday more productive.

Ok, but why Saturday?

During workdays we often don’t have enough time for our small personal tasks that don’t concern our regular work. Right after we return from office, we are tired, low energy and we don’t even want to take a look at our extremely long TO DO list.

Let’s perform these tasks on Saturday.

Saturday is free. You probably don’t have to go to the office. You can wake up when you want and when you have enough sleep. Therefore, you are full of energy. You can kick your day with short exercises, solid breakfast and favorite energetic music. You are not in office mood. You know that this is Saturday, so the whole thing would be easier.

How-to?

Start preparing for your productive Saturday as early as on Monday. During work week, make a separate TO DO List for your Saturday’s tasks. If it would be your first productive Saturday, don’t put too much things on your schedule - just few, easy tasks.

My own case study

My first productive Saturday included one hour of fast reading, writing a post, tiding up my CD’s and sauna.

I started my Saturday the way I like it. I had enough sleep; I took a shower and ate good breakfast. There was no need to worry or hurry. I was in really good, weekend mood and that really helped.

Another important point is that I had a plan what to do. I had my list of tasks. This way, it is not another Saturday, after hard week at work, when I don’t know what to do with my free time and I only procrastinate.

All these were enough to boost my productivity. Few tasks from my list were only a pleasure. When my productive Saturday was completed, I was really satisfied with it. I didn’t waste my time.

Try it. Don’t plan productive Saturday each week and don’t put too much tasks. Remember that Saturday is also for relax and time with family.

Of course after complete mission, reward yourself. For example you can enjoy some 80’s TV shows or other timewasters.
